Fire Prevention & Education

The best way to fight fire is to prevent it from happening in the first place! Here are a few of the things we do to help educate and engage people in our coverage area:

Firefighting

We fight fires. If it's big or complicated, we call neighboring departments for mutual aid, and they do the same with us. We often work with Town of Easton, Pine River, Town of Ringle, Town of Texas, and Town of Wausau. If there's a large need elsewhere, we may be paged as part of a statewide mutual aid program called MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System).

Medical Services

All of our medical responders are state-licensed Emergency Medical Responders. When you call 911, we are dispatched to provide care and stabilize patients until the ambulance arrives from Wausau. We partner with the City of Wausau Fire Department for medical Advanced Life Support (ALS) and transport.

History

In July 1969, three barns in the area were struck by lightning and caught fire. With insufficient fire suppression resources available to address all three fires, the community grew deeply concerned about their lack of fire protection. At the township's annual meeting in 1970, the issue was a major topic of discussion. On May 19, 1970, a meeting was held where residents voted to establish a volunteer fire department. They decided to purchase a fire truck with a 1,000-gallon water tank, a portable pump, and hoses. Lyle Weden was appointed as the first Fire Chief, Maynard Bedish as Assistant Chief, Victor Weber as Captain, and nine other men joined to form a twelve-member department.

In 1972, a new fire station was constructed, featuring a 6,000-gallon water storage tank beneath the floor, primarily for use during the winter months. By 1973, all firefighters were equipped with a home alert system, with monitors installed in their houses that could be activated by the Wausau Fire Department in the event of an emergency.
